Stainless Steel Sculpture – Birch Engineering shines aloft !

Sculptures & Structures No Comments »

The success of Anthony Gormley’s ‘Angel of the North’, since it’s 20 meter high, 53 meter wide wingspan was first raised aloft the Gates head skyline in 1995, has seen an increasing popularity for commissioning high-profile, large scale public sculpture for any number of urban and landscape projects across the country. Much media attention and controversy was recently focused on the 9 meter high bronze sculpture of a couple locked in an intimate pose, installed at the newly-opened St Pancreas International Station.

                                                 Mountain by Diane Maclean

Birch Engineering have been at the heart of specialist steel, plastics and glass sculpture manufacture to the professional artist / maker community for over 20 years. Established sculptors such Diane MacLean, Rick Kirby, John Farnham, Ivor Abrahams  to name a few  regularly call upon us to realize their pieces to the absolute highest standards of quality and durability technically achievable, which will also find their high-profile place in many outdoor public commissions.

Some of our finest examples of immaculate stainless steel finish to be found across the UK, range as far apart as Diane’s 12 metre high double-helix Mirror Polished Stainless Steel work, entitled ‘DNA (New Discovery)’ at East Dock Dundee to ‘Propeller’, an 8 metre high Coloured Stainless Steel column, shining high into the sky at Heathrow Airport. And a Huge Piece entitled “Mountain” commissioned for the Museum of Natural History which now resided at the University of Hertfordshire Stretching out over 20 M long and over 7m Tall.

All in Mirror polished Stainless Steel.

University Of Hertford Competition Prize

Hertfordshire University Prize Winner 2008, Work In Progress No Comments »

In April Birch Engineering launched a competition alongside the Universtity of Hertford for design students to create a sculpture. the winning piece to be placed in the grounds of the University and all the manufacturing completed by Birch Engineering. The Prize went to Vusumuzi Michael Mlambo.

                                                    Maquette

The Concept.

My sculpture proposal adresses the global issues of green-house gases, damage to the environment, global warming and the dependence of human beings in technology.  The Sculpture suggests that the human race is losing nature at the expense of technology and that life in general is under threat.  The Sculpture also presents the optional solution that if human beings stop and think, it is not yet too late, there is another chance.

The Sculpture.

The Sculpture is an image of withering tree that has fruit. the top half of the tree is almost completely dead.  The bottom half of the tree is still very green, strong and alive.  The tree has a lot of fruit: it almost looks as though it is overloaded.

Materials and Fabrication.

The tree is made of metals, hard metal for the stem, if possible, so that it will rust and blend with the rest of the trees and the soft or thin metals for the leaves. the fruits are made of motor and engine parts i have already spoken with Hemel Hempstead Car Breakers and they are willing to donate scrap parts in support of this project.
